Home Products that contain PFAS

This illustrates how PFAS contamination has entered into almost all aspects of our daily lives.

“On the banks of the Mississippi river in Cordova, Illinois, is a factory run by chemical industry giant 3M that makes adhesives, fire fighting foam, and other products — using highly toxic per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Despite the fact that PFAS are very harmful to people and persist indefinitely in the environment, state and federal agencies set no limits on 3M Cordova’s discharges of PFAS into the air or water. Illinois only requires 3M to collect and analyze samples quarterly from the wastewater drains that dump directly into the Mississippi River.”

“EWG: ‘Forever chemicals’ may taint nearly 20 million cropland acres.
Using state data, EWG estimates 5 percent of all crop fields could be using sewage sludge, or biosolids, as fertilizer, even though its often contaminated with PFAS.”

Each day, about 20 million gallons of sewage flows into the city of Tacoma’s wastewater treatment plants.
The water is separated, treated, and discharged into the Puget Sound, which leaves behind sludge—a mix of human excrement, industrial waste, and everything else that ends up in Tacoma’s sewers. The plants further treat the product to reduce pathogens, bacteria, heavy metals, and odors, and convert it into a fertilizer called biosolids….
Over 50 percent of the approximately 4.75 million dry metric tons of biosolids produced nationally each year is treated and applied to cropland.”

“Jason Grostic’s cows are tame and relaxed on his small Michigan farm. But after repeatedly testing his farm for PFAS chemicals in biosolids applied to his fields, state officials stopped Grostic from selling any meat or cattle from his farm. Feed grown on his farm is contaminated as well, and he’s having to buy feed for the herd he can no longer sell.”
